There is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke.
On Thursday, December 9, 2010, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin announced the publication of “How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease: The Biology and Behavioral Basis for Smoking-Attributable Disease.” This report reveals new scientific findings about how deadly cigarettes are and how quickly they can damage your body.
- There is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke.
- Any exposure to tobacco smoke is harmful.
- Smoking longer means more damage.
- Cigarettes are designed for addiction.
- There is no safe cigarette.
- The only proven strategy for reducing the risk of tobacco-related disease and death is to never smoke, and if you do smoke to quit.

Quit Smoking
The benefits of smoking cessation are clear: only 20 minutes after a smoker’s last cigarette, blood pressure and heart rate start to return to normal.
Medication
Use Zyban or the newer Varenicline (trade name Chantix in the USA and Champix in Canada, Europe and other countries, marketed by Pfizer). According to most studdies you will be more sucessful using Chantrix.
Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)
It is generally accepted that any form of NRT increases the success rate of a smoking cessation programme. NRT treatment’s have been shown to be effective, with little or no side-effects.
Combination therapy
Combination therapy, which involves counselling, the simultaneous administration of NRT (patches and/or gum) and/or medication.
Support Groups – behavioural changes
Groups deals with the emotional and psychological aspects involved in smoking.
Kick the habit on your own
Quitting all by yourself is not easy, but not impossible.
Never go back
Once you have quit, don’t pick-up another smoke, not even 5 years later, this is eaiser said than done, it is all to easy becomming addicted again.
